I’m a practice world champion now and that’s not who I want to be: Roger Federer
Twenty-eight year old Grand Slam champion Roger Federer has committed to a full schedule in the second half of the season, saying he had enough practice and hopes to quickly get his great shape early in the season.
Federer hit a two-month break to rest his body for 35 years, start his grass campaign and provide an eighth Wimbledon title in Stuttgart on Wednesday.
“There are more breaks now,” Federer said on the ATP website.
“I’ve had enough breaks.I’m a world champion today and in practice not what I want to be is.I want to be a champion on the tracks of matches.I’ll play a regular schedule for a second part of the season. And this is the beginning here at the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart. ”
The Swiss master has taken in the last two months after what he described as a startling success start of the year, which led to the victory at the Australian Open and the Indian Wells Miami Masters-doubles.
“I was very surprised to win the Australian Open and to support and win the double sun at Indian Wells and Miami was a complete surprise for me,” said Federer.
The 35-year-old man added that Rafael Nadal back to the domination of the clay court was not unexpected.
“I think Rafa won the French Open is less surprising because he had done nine times before … I was hoping he would dominate the clay court season like the old one,” Federer said.
The Swiss have also admitted that Nadal is favorite favorite to finish as No. 1 for the fourth time.
“Obviously, Rafa is in an excellent position to finish the number 1. For him, he will remain injury free. For me, it’s about returning to the path of triumph, I left Miami,” he said.
However, he stressed that the second half of the 2017 season will be much more competitive.
“I’m sure a lot of guys will start reproducing as well as possible in the second half of the season, just like Murray, Djokovic Nishikori, Raonic Zverev, Kyrgios, Stan, we all play our best tennis. The season, very exciting for the ATP circuit, “he added.
Federer will start his open campaign against Stuttgart the winner of French Pierre-Hugues Herbert and veteran German Tommy Haas.
